Listen & Remember 60th Anniversary Show!

From 1965 to 2006, the town of Waxhaw, NC, was home to a beloved outdoor play called Listen and Remember. The play told the story of the formation of the Waxhaws Colonial Settlement by Scots-Irish immigrants, a pivotal moment in the history of the area, and the birthplace of future U.S. President Andrew Jackson.
Written by local school teacher Dare Steele, Listen and Remember brought to life the struggles and triumphs of the early settlers as they worked to establish a new life in the wilderness. With original music written by Waxhaw native Elinor Niven McLaughlin, the play was a true community effort, presented by the Waxhaws Historical Festival & Drama Association and the Waxhaw Women’s Club.
For over four decades, audiences gathered to witness the story of their region’s founding come to life. The play featured a talented cast of local actors, many of whom performed in the production year after year, building a deep connection with the material and the community.
Listen and Remember was more than just a play; it was an opportunity for Waxhaw residents to come together and celebrate their shared history. For many, the play was a yearly tradition, a chance to revisit the past and connect with their neighbors. The production even served as a training ground for young actors.
While the production of Listen and Remember may have ended in 2006, its legacy lives on in the hearts and memories of those who experienced it. For Waxhaw residents, the play was a reminder of the town’s unique place in history, and a celebration of the community that made it all possible.
On June 21, 2025, come out and enjoy scenes from Listen & Remember! Judy Simpson Cook, local playwright, is producing and directing the scenes. This is an outdoor event. The rain date is Sunday, June 29. Light refreshments will be provided and enjoy a special exhibition after the show.
